TEACHING

Students learning a traditional dance in Cuajinicuilapa, Mexico
Drawing from John Dewey, Jones teaches sociology using the concept of praxis, meaning a combination of thinking, learning, and practice. Highlighting the link between social change and education, Dewey underscores that learning is not only about content and skills, but about using content and skills to develop a social consciousness and reach one’s potential as an engaged citizen.
Through education, Jones aims for her students to sociologically examine the issues they normally take for granted, become active participants in their own learning, and foster their capacity to contribute to society. Jones has been recognized for her efforts in teaching, including winning the 2019 R. Stephen Warner Faculty Teaching Award and the 2023 UIC Teaching Recognition Program Award.
